How It Works

GCD (Greatest Common Divisor)

  • Finds the largest number that divides both numerator and denominator
  • Uses Euclidean algorithm
  • Example: GCD(12, 16) = 4

Simplification Process:

  1. Find GCD of numerator and denominator
  2. Divide both by GCD
  3. Result is simplified fraction

Mixed Number Support

Mixed Number → Improper Fraction:

  • Formula: (Whole × Denominator) + Numerator
  • Example: 2 1/2 = (2 × 2 + 1)/2 = 5/2

Improper Fraction → Mixed Number:

  • Formula: Whole = Numerator ÷ Denominator, Remainder becomes new numerator
  • Example: 5/2 = 2 remainder 1 → 2 1/2

Step-by-Step Example

Simplifying 12/16:

text

Step 1: Find the GCD of 12 and 16
• GCD(12, 16) = 4

Step 2: Divide both numerator and denominator by 4
• 12 ÷ 4 = 3
• 16 ÷ 4 = 4

Step 3: Write the simplified fraction
• 3/4
